We had been planning to hold an Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) Walk My Way event here on the Gold Coast, based out of St. Andrews, on the 1st August this year. Of course, this and all other walks have had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions.
Walk My Way has been a campaign run by ALWS to raise money for children in refugee camps in Africa to go to school. The official walks, which have been held in various places around Australia, are 26 kilometres long, because every $26 raised enables a child in a refugee camp to go to school for one whole year.
So, this year ALWS have changed it Walk Your Way: much more independent, but still with the same result of helping out those less fortunate. We are still wanting to run a major event for this based out of our congregation here at St. Andrews, and it is being picked up in the College also. After a time of being locked down and isolated, how great is it to actually be able to now get out and do something to help others!
So, what can you do:
What a great way to work together for a fantastic cause even when we are physically apart!

So, what can you do:
- Sign up for Walk My Way here, or go here to donate: https://walkmyway.org.au/
- Once you’ve signed up, don’t forget to join our congregation’s team: St Andrews Church Tallebudgera (this is also the name to type in if you wish to donate to our group), so we can keep track of how we are all going together.
- Entry fee is $20 per child, $50 per adult. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the LLL all costs of the walkers packs, admin, postage, etc are already covered, so all of your registration fee goes straight to your fundraising total.
- Then, work out how you want to do this. Our ‘official’ date is the 1st August, but you can do it before or after that date, whatever suits you.
- Matt Crawford and Kirra from ALWS had worked out a track from our Worship Centre to the coast, and then walking south down to Rainbow Bay, Coolangatta, which is 26ks. You may still want to do this walk, either in one hit or over a number of stages. Or,
- You might want to do your own walk completely, either in one hit or many stages. Or,
- You might want to do something as a family; eg. play 26 board games, wash 26 cars, have a marathon of 26 episodes of a TV show … Or,
- You may wish to give up something that you really like for 26 days, and donate the money you save to your fundraising. Or,
- You may come up with something completely different. Or,
- You might not do anything, but just want to sponsor either an individual participant or our church group.
- We will be updating this page for this to show how we are going with this, so if you like we would love you to send in the ideas, and pictures if you are happy for them to be shared, of how you and your family are going about supporting this appeal. We would love to see what people come up with in doing this.
What a great way to work together for a fantastic cause even when we are physically apart!
